Allsop, Cheree
Girl from the Stars Series If you want a female warrior overcoming one after another attempt on her life and mind, this is the series for you. Liora has been raised as a Damaclan, the hated assassins of the known universe, called the Macrocosm. After escaping slavery, she is taken in by a Coalition ship. She survives one attempt to kill her after another. Life becomes complicated when the ship she is on decides to keep a galaxy destroying weapon out of the hands of all parties. Liora's powers increase as she survives each obstacle, adding to an increasing number of scars on her still beautiful body. Despite her upbringing, her goal is to rescue an increasing circle of sentients. I find it hard to get my head around instant travel between galaxies, and even more, instant communication between galaxies. If all this is possible, why not better medical care of the injured, including Liora? The hard science is basically nonexistent, but the adventure is great fun.

Anders, Charlie Jane
The City in the Middle of the Night 2019 Kindle Version: Basically not my kind of book, but very well written. Several characters keep having hope which is consistently crushed by a person who is only using them. The main character, Sophie, takes chances on this unpleasant planet with very unpleasant politics, and discovers a sentient species who reaches out to her. Throughout the book the several "good" characters learn to accept themselves as flawed beings trying to improve the human situation on the planet of January. There is a sliver of hope at the end, but it's a basically depressing view of mankind.

Asher, Neal
This author is really good at building strange environments. His plants and animals are so well described that we can envision the environments, and each planet is so very different. I guess these are considered post-cyberpunk as there are governments, but there are plenty of the incredibly bad guys. The whole human augmentation issue is debated, sort of, and AIs are part of the landscape. There are also aliens of various sorts and plenty of action. The characters are well developed. No boring bits. In addition, there are often interesting tongue-in-cheek introductions to each chapter. Some are quite funny.
Polity Universe: Agent Cormac Series
These books follow the development of Ian Cormac as an agent protector to full protector of humankind. In the first book Ian Cormac decides to no longer be gridlinked, as he is becoming addicted; we go on from there. We meet a number of evil persons with God complexes. One interesting tool of evil is Mr. Crane, a golum, who eventually finds himself. Cormac is ambivilent about who is friend and who is enemy, such as the Dragon and even the Earth Central AI. What is nice is that each book wraps up nicely with strong possibilities left open. Absolutely excellent series.

Humans have colonized another star group and settled two planets called Myran and Alluvia and called their two planets "The Collective." They established colony planets for their resources, but colonists on these planets have few rights. This series shows the development of a rebellion. The character development of the rebel leaders (Fender, Reyne) and the power brokers on the the two Collective planets is interesting and fast-moving. There is interesting play between the idealists and the pragmatists on both sides.

The Medusa Chronicles 2016 Kindle Version - This is a sequel the Arthur Clarke novella, A Meeting with Medusa. We follow Howard Falcon, an astronaut survivor of an accident. He is now mostly machine. We follow him over a period of several hundred years during which machines become independent beings. Falcon is called upon as an intermediary with the machines, especially Adam, whom he had brought to sentience. This is a grand tour of the solar system over a period of 1000 years, with interesting science and philosophy.

Baxter, Stephen and Clarke,Arthur
These involve a lot of interesting science, following Bisesa Dutt. In the first book she goes back in time through an "Eye" from the Firstborn who are removing all other sentient beings becauese they use up energy. In this past there are slices of time from across the time spectrum of human development. They call the planet of time slices Mir. We meet Alexander the Great and others. Chicago is the only place on the western continent with humans on it. The second book is the present world fighting to preserve Earth with some success after warning from Bisesa. The third book involves another attack of Earth by the Firstborn and the human work to stop it. Great back and forth between Mir and Earth through some very interesting science. Also interesting dichotomy between humans on Earth and those living in space.

Infinite Sky Series: This had a really slow start, which is probably good for people who like lots of details for a trip to Titan. The last third of the first book is good, but the second book explains the ending of the first book. More torus are found, one in the Gulf of Mexico. Things happen on both Titan and Earth and no one shoots at aliens, but they don't stay, or is there still a connection? Interesting.

Thrive Space Colony: Humans have left A dying Earth to settle other star systems. The main character, Sass, has just finished a 20 year punishment for being part of a revolution. The urbanites have withheld medical and and other necessities from the settlers who live outside the city. Sass leads another fight for the settlers with the help of an unusual group of co-conspirators. A motley crew goes into space from the colony moon that is their home. They discover the nutritional problems holding all the small colonies back (along with other power play and addiction problems), and in between fight off pirates and other baddies. The Thrive crew helps save thousands of inhabitants and face other problems. They solve all, and end up helping to improve the whole star system. Sass and Clay find out they may live a very long time, and are off for more investigation. A satisfying read although a bit unrealistic. The characters are developed nicely. Solidly written.

Nova is the poor girl clawing to survive. She and her ship Crusader and her trusty robot side-kick Cal are bounty hunters. In the first book, Survivor, she ends up on a desert planet searching for two escaped prisoners. She finds that the Confederacy is digging up some kind of archaeological find. This is where it gets close to fantasy as she manages to save the galaxy through going back and forth in time. Kind of young adult. Unfortunately, the following books go into living dead and other strange stuff I am simply not interested in reading.

Star Nomad: Fallen Empire, Book 1 2016 Kindle Version
Star Kingdom Series Casmir, a nerdy roboticist and professor, is attacked by super robots (crushers) and the adventures go on from there. Really well written. As the series continues we get more complicated, with more background of the main characters, who include pirates, a bounty hunter and miscellaneous good and evil royalty. Casmir becomes more enduring and wry as the series continues. Also, we learn more about Rache, Qin, Kim, Sir Asgar, Laser Lopez and the other characters. Each character is really well developed. Of course there is corruption in high places. Lots of adventures for the weird and wonderful characters who are all snarky in different ways. While the various parties in the on-going battle for dominance in their part of the galaxy continues, relationships become better defined. Casmir continues to save everyone he can; Kim and Rache are coming closer, and father Bjarke and son Asgar are getting to an understanding. Great read. In Home Front the characters start taking sides. Many with ambivilence start taking sides, usually with Casmir. The new crushers developed by Casmir start getting personalities, much to the pleasure of Casmir and the confusion of others. The Qin sisters are liberated, with an uncertain future, but never fear. Casmir accumulates followers spanning robots, crushers androids, knights, scientists, kings, pirates, etc. unfortunately, that does not include the leaders of his home planet, whom he is trying to help, but not in the way they want. Really looking forward to the final book in this great series full of humor and tongue in cheek discourse.

Wayfarers 1: The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet 2015 Kindle Version
We follow Rosemary Harper, who is running away from an unhappy life on Mars. She had a good education as an administrative clerk so the ship, The Wayfarer, an old space tunnel borer, hires her. The story follows this multi-species crew that learns to be a family through good and bad times. We learn about various species and outlier colonies and beings, and how humans such as Rosemary and Captain Ashby learn to tolerate, appreciate and respect each sapient being. The crew is kooky, each with issues, but they learn to get along and totally support each other. A very satisfying read.
Wayfarers 2: A Closed and Common Orbit 2016 Kindle Version
Another marvelous book by the author. We follow two characters from the first book. Pepper, formerly Jane 23, and the AI Sidra in a human kit body (illegal), formerly the ship AI Lovelace. Jane 23 is a slave clone sorting scrap in a factory and has no idea she is on a planet or there is any place outside the factory. We follow her from when she escapes the factory at age 10 to when she finally escapes the scrap yard at age 19 with Laurian, who becomes her partner Blue. The chapters alternate between the development of Sidra in the present and Pepper in the past. We also follow the interaction of Jane 23 and the ship AI Owl, on a scrap shuttle in the scrap yard. Owl teaches Jane about the universe and works at keeping her alive until they can all escape. The development of all the sapient characters, including the AIs, is really well done.

Renegade Star Series: Jace Hughes, renegade barely getting by, with debt, takes a job to escort a child (Lex) and a so-called nun (Abigail Pryar) to another planet. This is the beginning a big change in his and the galaxy's future. He becomes the leader a varied group of refugees to find the original Earth, fighting various armies and with the help of various sentient AIs. This is the typical noble rough-edged rogue leading humanity to better things. However, satisfying read.

The Galactic Law Series: The upstanding cop-to-be Gage Walker stays true to the mission despite hints of corruption around him on Taurus Station. Although this is sci-fi, that is almost irrelevant. Much more about keeping law and order in the wild frontier. Deputy Walker is just doing his job, fighting the bad guys and rescuing people from slavery. He works with a renegade and I recognize some from the star renegade series. The second book is better than the first book in the series.

This space opera is well written with great character development. When earth was being overrun by a killer species three colony ships were able to leave, and were never heard from. Earth was taken over by their saviors, who were not so great. This series is from the viewpoint of descendents of one of the colony ships, on the planet Darien. These books investigate the possibility of of universes dying and new ones being created from the debris of the old. The remainders of the old are in an under universe of many tiers, with many battles of various kinds going on down there. There is only one gate (warpwell) remaining to the under universe and that is on Darian, guarded by the local sentient species, the Uvovo and the sentient forest on Darien and its moon. Different species want the power of the warpwell so battles ensue. The author also investigates AIs and implants and various iterations.

Merkiaari Wars - Although these are very military, the character development is excellent. We have human vipers, who are part machine, but kept very few. We have the Shan, a peaceful cat-like species, the Merkiaari, the ultimate evil beings, trying to wipe out all the "vermin," as they call other sentients, and others that we meet throughout the series. This is a far ranging series that I have found very interesting.

The Saiph Series – I am divided on these books. The themes are great but all the endless military equipment, types of ships and number of troops gets boring. In addition, the author really isn't into character development. Sometimes it seems like he will develop some characters, but it then goes on to the next military confrontation. The basic story involves the discovery of a Saiph library which shows that the Saiph had meddled with the DNA of a number of pre-sentient beings in hopes of developing a number that go on to higher sentience. Humans were among those developed. Apparently the sign of meddling was five fingers (kind of simplistic, but it works for the books). There is another group called, "the Others" who consider all who have been meddled with to be half-breeds and that they and any other sentient beings must be wiped from the universe. The battles begin. I am hoping that there will be better continuity in following the characters in future books of the series as the underlying story is quite good.

The K'Tai War Series – A well written page turner. This is a take on the hidden hero parents who are obliged to come out when their children (teens) are in trouble. The narrative goes through several sides of the fight, getting into different minds. The characters are well developed and the writing is much tighter than in the Saiph series. Can't wait for the rest of the series.

This space opera is well written with great character development. This takes place in our solar system. Interesting development of differences between those living on planets (Earth, Moon, Mars) and those living outside the inner planets. The main characters, James Holden, Naomi, Alex and Amos have many adventures with their ship, the Rocinante, saving the solar system. The first four books develop Holden's character, but the fifth book, Nemesis Games, gives a lot of background of the other three characters. In the last two books, James Holden and company work to stop fighting in the solar system. Of course, lots of tense moments.

Odyssey One: Into the Black 2012, Kindle Version
After WWIII the starship/warship Odyssey was built with Eric Weston as Captain. On the trial run using transition drive (immediate transition to distant star), they rescue Milla, a human from an offshoot of humanity whose people, from their capital on the planet of Ranquil, are against fighting. They are being attacked by the Drasin, an arachnid species who hate all humanity. The Ranquil Central World-Mind digs up old plans for warships so they can survive. The Odyssey fights with the Drasin around another planet being destroyed by the Drasin and saves about 500 people. When Weston takes the people to Ranquil they discover that the Drasin are already attacking. Through various means, they wipe them out and take an ambassador back to Earth to discuss the situation.
Odyssey One: The Heart of the Matter 2012 Kindle Version
Weston "meets" Central. He decides to try to find where the Drasin come from, and who is behind them. He finds they come from a Dyson swarm surrounding a star. They controllers seem to have ships similar to the Priminae (people of Ranquil), so this makes him suspicious.
Odyssey One: Homeworld 2013 Kindle Version
The Chinese with their ship Weifang, captained by Sun Ang Wen, have an FTL drive different than the Confederation drive, and search in another direction, and find the Drasin amd unintentionally lead them to Earth. We find out more about the history of the galaxy, and the Empire, of whom the Priminae are off-shoots.
Odyssey One: Out of the Black 2013 Kindle Version
Earth is attacked by the Drasin, and Weston survives a crash of the Odyssey in New York, and leads the fight against the Drasin. We meet Gaia, the World-Mind of Earth (Terra). Terra wins against the Drasin, with help, but is badly damaged.
Odyssey One: Warrior King 2016 Kindle Version
In his new ship, the Odysseus, which is a Priminaen/Terran blend, Weston explores, meeting the Empire while they are trying to find out what happened to the Drasin, their tools. The Empire is an aristocracy, and very structured, with little room for innovation. Hints that Gaia's child is living in the singularity drive of the Odysseus.
Odyssey One: Odyseus Awakening 2018 Kindle Version
Fight with the Empire, barely winning. We learn more about the Empire. The son of Gaia, Odysseus, is awakened.
Odyssey One: Odyseus Ascendant 2018 Kindle Version

And All The Stars A Grave 2011 Kindle Version. I liked the story line but the dialogue was too long. Also, the relationship between Karen and Daryl is a bit unrealistic. Either the author has a truly unique relationship or no adult relationship and only dreams. In any case the basic story line is good, but the book needs editing.

Dalzelle, Joshua
Omega Force Series: Great multi-alien adventure series; lots of humor. The aliens aren't really all that alien, very human-like in personality.

Black Fleet Series: These aliens are much more alien, but pretty awful. Humans are not at all prepared, not believing anybody who gets into space would be evil. Jackson Wolfe leads the way toward saving mankind, despite the non-backing of the space military leaders.

This is one the endless number of Egyptian based alien intervention books. Not a bad book, but not a subject I am much interested in.

Sentients of Orion: The Complete Series2017 Kindle Version
The story was excellent but I was distracted by the poor spelling and name mix ups. Interestingly, the characters developed within themselves over the four books. The main characters chose the greater good over personal good in the end, which might not be realistic, but is nice. There were nice digs at self-absorbed academics and power absorbed so-called leaders.

These are nice space romances, each with a strong human woman who is abducted by the evil Tecran aliens. The first book follows Rose McKenzie, who eventually frees and is freed by Sazo, the AI imprisoned in the Class 5 space ship that had captured her. She becomes the Watson to him as Sherlock Holmes, using this correlation in order to socialize him. Through many adventures, she works with, and falls in love with (and him with her) the Grih captain, Dav Julian. The attraction all Grih find for humans is their singing voices, which is noted in both books. The second book follows Fiona Russell, the second abductee, who also frees an AI, Eazi. Adventures ensue and she also falls in love with a Grih captain, Hal Vickeri, who also loves her. Both humans and their AI friends save all kinds of people of course. Not realistic, but great fun. The fourth book is less interesting but ties up some loose ends.

Donaldson, Stephen R.
On its surface some very evil persons (Angus Thermopyle and Nick Succorso) who roam space preying on others, are being combated by the good guys, the United Mining Company Police (UMCP) represented by Morn Hyland. Things are not so easy to quantify. There is extensive character development (and angst) which shows that neither "side" is all that it seems. To complicate things, we have the alien species, the Amnion, who can transform humans with a mutagen, that turns them into Amnioni. We also meet the owner of UMC (Holt Fasner) who is a true megalomaniac who is subverting the police who are trying to do their job. Well rounded out ending.

The Cadicle Series - Each of these books reveals another layer of deceit in the Taran world of power, and the subjects of deceit who manage to remain decent despite all. These follow the two Sietinen heirs who have decided to develop their telepathic and telekinetic abilities to help humankind despite manipulation and secrets.
1 - Architects of Destiny 2015 Kindle Version
Cris Sietinen, the Sietinen Dynasty of the planet Tararia heir, has telepathic abilities which are frowned upon by the Priesthood of the Cadicle. He runs away from home and reinvents himself as Cris Sights, and works on a freighter. He is found by the Tararian Selective Service (TSS) who are the only organization that use and develop telepathic and telekinetic skills. At TSS headquarters (on the backside of Earth's moon, without the knowledge of Earth) Cris develops his skills and meets and marries Kate, who, he discovers, is from another Tararian Dynasty.
2 - Veil of Reality 2015 Kindle Version
In this book we meet Wil, the son of Cris and Kate, who has incredible abilities. He is captured by the Bakzen, cloned beings, at age 14, but he manages to escape because of his abilities. More is revealed and the origin of the Bakzen is hinted at. Wil begins to realize there is a lot expected of him, and his birth was somehow arranged.
3 - Bonds of Resolve 2015 Kindle Version
Saera Alexander of Earth enters and becomes bonded to Wil. Wil's power is extreme, and the fact that war is going on is revealed by him to all the other TSS agents.
4 - Web of Truth 2016 Kindle Version
Saera discovers her mother is from a Dynasty, another sign of manipulation by the Priesthood. We meet another group of humans called the Aesir who test Wil and agree that he is the Cadicle who will be able to save humankind, but it means killing all the Bakzen. We find out a lot more about the origins of the Bakzen.
5 - Crossroads of Fate 2016 Kindle Version
War ramps up. The Bakzen are destroyed, but Wil can't come to terms with having killed billions of people. He eventually comes to terms with the help of of someone on a water world. We have hints of another person who is alive from a dynasty the Priesthood had tried to destroy. The Priesthood wants to completely control humans and this person could help destroy them.
6 - Path of Justice 2017 Kindle Version
Twenty years later and Wil and Saera have twins, a son, Jason, and daughter, Raena, who have been sheltered from their heritage growing up on Earth. At 16, they are pushed into the Dynasty/TSS situation when Raena comes into her powers unexpectedly. This book takes us to their training and another attempted kidnapping by the Priesthood. We also meet the heir, Ryan, to the seventh dynasty, who has been hidden until now.
