An interesting series, but I suggest you don't read Episode 0, as that confused things for me. As the series develops we find out that the humans in these books have been developed by another race, the Nankuani, to be slaves, and are kept in slavery through chemical means. Slowly a number of humans begin to realize the truth through the secret help of the Knights Templar. This series involves reluctant human heroes, who are supposed to clean up the universe (the only ones capable of it??? Give me a break!). There is quite good character development of some of the persons, but the heroes seem kind of dense. Why would they be the saviors of the universe? However, a well-developed story line that keeps you on the edge of your seat.

I rarely read alternate history books, but this was interesting. Insectoid type aliens are on earth and one person is chosen by them to communicate with humans. This all supposedly takes place in 2007. The author explains the difficulties of understanding beings that are so very different from each other.

I really like the science and the story is good. However, the editing is awful. Maybe spell check was used, but often the wrong word was chosen (such as boarder instead of border). For me that is very distracting.

These books have unreal human relationships (the marriages are really too good to be true, but dream on) and a bit too much tech stuff for me, but I still liked the books.

These authors are excellent in developing alien mind sets and the struggle of members of these alien cultures to understand each other, always my favorite kind of book. I would love to see follow ups as the exploration team goes out into the galaxy.

The Forever War 1974 Print Version
Interesting study of time dilation. William Mandella is a soldier fighting the Taurans. Because of time dilation he fights the whole 1000 year war but is still young when it ends. He and his fellow vets are now throwbacks, as humans have changed radically. The second book has the vets isolated on their own planets. William and his wife/partner rebel and take a ship out of the galaxy. Then something really mysterious happens and other non-humans become part of a very interesting resolution that gives food for thought.

Well written and plenty of action. Carmen, a teen whose family are Mars colonists, is saved by unknown underground Mars inhabitants, but they also are not native. Working together, both species make some interesting discoveries.
Starbound 2010 Kindle Version (Library)
Carmen and her husband, pilot Paul Collins, go out to find the Others, who placed the Martians on Mars as a conduit to warn the Others that the humans are able to go to another planet. When they return, with an Others avatar, the Others warn humans against agression, but humans never learn.
Earthbound 2011 Print Version (Library)
This book describes the way Earth deteriorates. Earth continues to test the Others, who retaliate further by stopping all electricity from working on Earth. Humans seem not to learn.
Worlds 1981 Kindle Version
Another series about the craziness of humans. The books go into the inhumanity of man against man, but also of the exceptions. The Worlds are 41 satellites orbiting Earth that house half a million people. The main character, Marianne O'Hara, was born on New New York, the largest World. Because of her intelligence she is sent to Earth for a year of study. An anti-World faction on Earth shoots missiles at the Worlds and destroys many of them, but not New New York as it is inside an iron asteroid. O'Hara barely makes it back to New New York leaving behind her great love, Jeff Hawking.
Worlds Apart 1983 Kindle Version
In this book we follow Jeff on Earth, which has been hit by a designer plague that kills people after about age 20. Jeff is immune because a genetic anomaly. There are strange, brutal beliefs that sprout, one based on Charles Manson combined with Christianity that results in crucifixions and cannibalism.
Worlds Enough and Time 1992 Kindle Version
This book chronicles the spaceship leaving for another star system. The ship is hit by a cyber attack from New New, by religious fanatics, but eventually makes it to their new planet, where they meet the sort-of guardians of the galaxy. Thee are hints of many things in the third book, but the series mostly is about the development of the nexus called Marianne O'Hara.

Hamilton, Peter F.
The author writes BIG books, that are very complex. The reader at times has problems keeping the various characters straight, but that eventually solves itself. The story line is huge and quite absorbing. I would read anything of his as he doesn't leave stray loose ends like many authors.
Confederation Universe These books contain many interesting ideas such as the discovery of proof of souls, the multi-universe discovery, why people fear death and why purgatory/hell was invented.

Harrison, S.
Infinity Trilogy: Harrison is an excellent writer. Infinity(Finn) is the daughter of the richest man in the world, Richard Blackstone (whom she has never met) and who is very involved in high tech. She is raised by an assortment of servants who turn out to be a lot more. Finn eventually goes to very exclusive secondary school and becomes best friends with a tech nerd called Bit. Bit hacks into the Blackstone computer and manages to arrange a tour of the Blackstone research center for a group of students, including Finn and Bit. That's when things get really interesting. Finn discovers she has a divided brain. One side is the sheltered Finn, but the other side is an assasin called Infinity. Her father has been using her to kill off competitors. The node, disguised as a necklace, that controls which of her brain controls her body is damaged and the two sides of her brain start seeing each other. In the research center both sides try to take over and the powers that be try to eliminate the problem. There are robots, killer spiders and various AIs on various sides. The whole trilogy takes place when Finn/Infinity turns 17. This is not my normal read, but it was so well-written that I really enjoyed it.

Her Instruments Box Set, Books 1-4: Earthrise, Rose Point, Laisrathera, and A Rose Point Holiday 2017 Kindle Version - Theresa (Reese) Eddings ran away from her restrictive Mars family and became the captain of a rundown ship. She accumulated an eclectic crew of many species and, in order to get out of debt, agreed to rescue an Eldritch from slavers, and so the story begins. I like a story that develops insecure beings into whole beings. It's a happy ending romance, but much more complex than that. Almost all the characters have character flaws to overcome, or at least learn to live with. It has the trappings of palaces, queens and handsome nobles, but then goes behind the scenes to find the suffering and evil that must be overcome.

Hough, Jason M.
This is a well written trilogy with well-developed characters. An alien ship provides a space elevator in Darwin, Australia, with no explanation. About ten years later the aliens distribute a plague that reduces most humans to subhumans, animals, ruled by emotions. Only a few humans around the space elevator aren't affected because of an "aura" surrounding the elevator. In addition, there is a scattering of people immune to the plague. Most of the main characters are "immunes" (Skylar, Samantha, Vannesa, Ana), but there are others not immune who are key characters (Tania, Prumble, Russell, Grillo). The main characters Skylar (the hero) and Tania are especially well-developed. This series starts slowly but by the third book it becomes very intense and ultimately very satisfying.

Half Way Home 2014 Kindle Version - This is another teens on their own type book, but on another planet. Persons are awakened 15 years before they should have been by the computer in charge of them. They were 15 years old. The computer tried to abort the awakening resulting in only one hundred surviving the aborted awakening. The computer's only mission is to contact those who sent them, not to save the young people. Conflict develops and a group reluctantly guided by the narrator, runs away and makes some interesting discoveries. The story develops into an absorbing, well-written saga.

Follow Marine Torin Kerr and her mixed alien crew constantly saving the galaxy against all odds and clueless higher ups. They are well-written and well-paced with nice ironic humor. The Peacekeeper continuation of the series have the same main characters but now they are wardens (not marines), still saving the galaxy.

Loralynn Kennakris series: Kind of lightweight, holds the reader's attention. Loralynn, who had been a slaver captain's sex slave for eight years, gets away and after various adventures, makes a life-changing decision to become a fighter pilot, but she still carries considerable baggage from her time as a slave. A bit too much description of military structure, training and ships for my taste, but might be just the thing for some.

Interesting series of eight humans settling a planet they call Serendipity in another star system after many years in stasis. In the meantime, Earth is going downhill and another ship is sent out, but these are the powerful. The original settlers of Serendipity try to incorporate the new people, but they want to take over. Of course, the good guys eventually win, but a good read. Liked it a lot. A lot more adventures, including going back to save Earth from itself.

Ambassador Series Very well written. Confusing at first, but necessary to the plot and character development. Cory Wilson slowly comes to the understanding that things are not as they all seem for Earth or the Condi. The author develops the constant fight of hate and fear as opposed to understanding and acceptance. Very pleased with the tight development. As the series develops Cory grows in stature, marries, becomes Coldi, and has a child. Looking forward to more in the series.

Humans had left Earth over 700 years ago on several colony ships. The New Terran, Alex Racine, a brilliant mathemetician who runs a tug ship finds and boards a ship that had been damaged by an unknown alien. He awakens the AI, Julien, who runs the ship and discovers that the ship had been damaged over 70 years ago. Less than 20 Méridien citizens remain alive in stasis. They are from the Confederation, which was settled by a different human colony ship. The two human colonies developed differently on their separate planets, but neither had any military. The alien Silver Ship that had damaged the Méridien ship was devastating one planet after another. The New Terrans repair the Méridien in exchange for technology and Alex goes back as captain of the ship to Confederation space with the lovely Renée. The books document the differences in the colonies, causing much misunderstanding. The politics of New Terra start out good, but by the end of book two we see that it now is in the hands of what we see as an evil man. Never fear, the hero solves all. In the third book we discover the truth about the silver ships and Alex again leads the good against evil. In the fourth book we see the development of Harakan, the planet of the reluctant leader, Alex. The new planet is settled by rebels of all sorts, including the Swei Swee. the enslaved pilots of the silver ships, enslaved by the Nua'll. The fifth book, Sol, has the Harakan citizens going to Sol to try to stop them in their attempt to take over Méridien, New Terra and Harakan. These books have all good or all evil beings, but they are nevertheless really great reads. Starting with Book 8, we start meeting more species on other planets. Of course Alex and friends are helping solve problems on these planets, even while Alex is working on preventing the Nua'll from destroying more planets. The Pyrean books follow the colony ship Honora Belle that has settles at a system with a poor planet for settling. The humans have divided into three groups, the rich downsiders, the poorer stationers and spacers, and the empaths who stayed on the deteriorating colony ships. The spacer Jessie and the Empath Harbour start the changes by discovering a dome on a moon that allows them to travel to different planets and meet other sentient species. Alliance takes place hundreds of years later when the and links the Pyrean books with the Silver Ship books and is as good as all the others. In SADEs Alex continues toward his goal of promoting peace in the galaxy. After a confrontation with House Brixton on Méridien, Alex is off to the Alliance to help the species there fight the Colony insectoids. Alex, with the urging of his team adjusts his belief that a government must approve implants for its citizens. He realized that Captain Jess Cinders, who is trying to clear domes of the Colony, is very handicapped without an implant. In the last two books of the series the SADES along with several sentients discover how to move gates and then eventually construct domes. The books end with mostly peace in this corner of the galaxy. Looking forward to more books by this author.

Jyr, Aer-ki
Since I never read the author's other books, I come to this fresh. I liked all the aliens, especially Jalia, the Junta and the Cres. The one human, who had been in stasis for 16,000 years, is back to save the Galaxy. This book takes place a couple of million years in the future, but sentients are generally no better or worse than we are. I am definitely looking forward to future books in the series. However, I do get weary of having only humans being able to solve the problems. Very unrealistic, but this is science fiction!
